In 1846 the U.S. commissioned Henry Schoolcraft to develop a comprehensive reference work on the history, culture and social mores of Indian Tribes throughout North America.
This resulting set of six oversized volumes, featuring a wealth of illustrations by Seth Eastman, was prepared under the direction of the Bureau of Indian Affairs and published by the authority of Congress, which appropriated nearly $30,000 a volume for the purpose. Featuring over 300 vintage illustrations throughout.
