About the Book

A magnificent reproduction of the stunning book that detailed the conquering of the end of the Earth…

On April 6, 1909, Robert E. Peary reached the North Pole. It was the greatest – and most controversial – achievement of the “Heroic Age” of polar exploration, an era when the world's imagination was gripped by the exploits of larger-than-life figures risking everything to reach the farthest and most forbidding ends of the Earth.

Readers were eager for Peary's personal account of his triumph, but only a lucky few acquired copies of the luxurious 1910 limited first edition of his gripping memoir, The North Pole: its Discovery in 1909 under the Auspices of the Peary Arctic Club.

Now, Easton Press presents a gorgeous vintage recreation of that historic book: Robert Peary's THE NORTH POLE, a Deluxe Limited Edition meticulously reproduced from a rare pristine copy of the 1910 first edition and strictly limited to exactly 600 hand-numbered copies.

Driven by an all-consuming need to achieve greatness, Robert Peary was determined to be the first man to make it to the North Pole. Between 1886 and 1908 he made seven Artic trips, including three unsuccessful attempts for the Pole, that made him America's foremost explorer. But he was determined to attain his ultimate goal and in 1908 the fifty-two year old Peary again set out to conquer the Pole.

Peary's dramatic and detailed narrative captures the wonder of the Arctic, as well as the explorer's indomitable will and deep debt to the Inuits, whose friendship and expertise were central to Peary's career. The 1910 limited first edition of Peary's memoir featured an introduction by President Theodore Roosevelt and was illustrated with eight exquisite full-page reproductions of hand-colored photographs, as well as 100 additional black&white photographs and a full-color folding Arctic map.
