The beloved Caldecott Award Honor Book in the 40th Anniversary Edition…

When Tomie dePaola was four years old, his Italian relatives asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up. “I'm going to be an artist,” little Tomie declared. “I'm going to write stories and draw pictures for books.”

And he did. Today, Tomie dePaola is one of the true superstars of picture books, a “creative visionary” (in the words of The Boston Globe) and winner of the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award for lifetime contribution to children's literature.

No work more represents Tomie dePaola's genius than his beloved 1976 Caldecott Honor Book, Stregna Nona, which in 2012 was voted by Library Journal one of the top 100 children's books of all time.

Easton Press is proud to present, STREGA NONA, a 40th Anniversary leather-bound Collector Edition personally autographed by artist and author, Tomie dePaola.

“The one thing you must never do is touch the pasta pot.”

In dePaola's story, Strega Nona is an elderly village healer and sorceress who hires a good-hearted but impetuous assistant named Big Anthony. Anthony secretly observes his boss conjure unlimited pasta from an ordinary pot and then attempts the magic himself. It works! Unfortunately, Anthony failed to learn how to stop the pot, and soon the village is flooded with pasta.

Although some readers believed dePaola was adapting an old Italian tale, both the title character and the story are the artist's invention. Strega Nona – “Granny Witch” in Calabrese Italian – evolved from dePaola's obsessive doodling of the traditional big-nosed, big-chinned commedia dell'arte character Punchinello, while the the story was inspired by the Grimm fairy tale, “Sweet Porridge.”

Forty years after it made Tommie dePaola a star, Strega Nona is as popular as ever, its first readers now sharing with their children and grandchildren the book's gorgeous ink and watercolor art and lively storytelling. The Easton Press Collector Edition STREGA NONA is a chance to own this children's book classic in a deluxe signed edition.
