Jacob Tonson was known as "the greatest of English publishers". His 1697 edition of the classic works of great Roman poet Virgil is available here as an Easton Press leather-bound edition. This presents Virgil's three great works -- the Pastorals, the Georgics, and the Aeneid -- in John Dryden’s acclaimed translation, along with a wealth of breathtaking etchings from a late 17th-century master.
With sumptuous paper, an intricate and deeply inlaid cover design, 22kt gold accents on the hubbed spine, beautifully marbled endsheets, and a clothbound slipcase with matching, textured design, this is a stunning reflection of Easton Press's commitment to superb craftsmanship and quality.
This generously sized volume includes the Pastorals, Georgics and Aeneid of Virgil. Tonson illustrated the book with the sumptuous plates that had been done by Wenceslaus Hollar, whose harmonious landscapes and precise renderings are remarkable for their virtuosity and detail. There are ten etchings in the Pastorals, twenty in the Georgics, and seventy-one in the Aeneid.
