About the Book

There is simply nothing like this extraordinary edition.

There are beautiful and revered books that are so rare that they remain largely unknown outside the community of specialists and collectors. The Ship that Sailed to Mars is such a book.

Published in 1923 in a sumptuous and now very scarce edition, it is described by The Dictionary of 20th Century British Book Illustrators as a “masterpiece” and “the most original and beautiful children's book of the 1920s.”

Now Easton Press is proud to present a breathtaking recreation of this legendary 1923 illustrated book masterpiece: William M. Timlin's THE SHIP THAT SAILED TO MARS, an exclusive leather-bound Deluxe Edition limited to 600 hand-numbered copies.

One of the most beautiful books of the 20th century.

Architect William M. Timlin had never written or illustrated a book when he created for his son's entertainment a science-fiction fantasy tale of an Old Man who sails to Mars on a ship of his own design.

Despite Timlin's inexperience, the first publishing house to see The Ship that Sailed to Mars was so enchanted that they decided to publish it exactly as Timlin had given it to them – with 48 water-color images alternating with 48 pages of Timlin's hand-written text – and do so in a lavish edition that would equal the great editions deluxe of the pre-World War I era.

The combination of Timlin's evocative watercolors, magical story, and the edition's superlative production values made the 1923 The Ship that Sailed to Mars an instant classic. Unfortunately, fire destroyed many of the original 2000 1923 copies and much of the original artwork.

An illustrated book masterpiece recreated by the masters of traditional bookmaking.

The limited Deluxe Edition William M. Timlin's THE SHIP THAT SAILED TO MARS is a meticulous recreation of the gorgeous 1923 original that features all the superior features one expects from Easton Press.

William M. Timlin's 48 full-page color plates and 48 pages of calligraphic text are brilliantly reproduced, and – just as in the lavish original - all are mounted by hand into the book just as in the 1923 edition.

Text and plates are printed on beautiful museum quality archival paper and the pages are Smyth-sewn into the bindings with sturdy thread.

And, of course, the binding of this grand large book is hand-rubbed leather with a hubbed spine and 22kt gold accents and title inlays.

And each of the 600 hand-numbered Deluxe Edition copies of William M. Timlin's THE SHIP THAT SAILED TO MARS will include a matching slip-case custom designed for both storing and displaying this stunning book.
