About the Book

The landmark 1891 illustrated history written by African-American veteran Joseph T. Wilson…

Until the middle of the 20th century, the extensive and crucial role that African-American soldiers and sailors played in America's first wars was largely forgotten and, indeed, deliberately neglected by white historians.

But after the Civil War, a handful of pioneering black historians attempted to excavate the story of African-American military service. None was more qualified for or so successfully met the challenge as did Joseph T. Wilson, the African-American Civil War combat veteran turned fearless civil rights activist and renowned journalist, historian, and poet.

Published in 1888, Wilson's The Black Phalanx was the most comprehensive study of African Americans in the military ever attempted. Today it remains an essential work for understanding America's military history and the African-American experience.

Now Easton Press presents a vintage re-creation of the 1891 illustrated edition of Joseph T. Wilson's powerful book: THE BLACK PHALANX, an exclusive leather-bound Collector's Edition.

The ground-breaking 19th century account of African-American soldiers.

Drawing upon government, military, and newspaper archives, as well as biographies, correspondence, interviews, and personal experience, The Black Phalanx chronicles the central role African-American fighters played in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and, most of all, the Civil War.

Wilson details how African Americans were, despite how the nation treated them, ever eager to fight for America and from Bunker Hill and Yorktown to the Battle of New Orleans in 1815 were a vital part of the battlefield success that first established the United States.

The Black Phalanx covers every aspect of African-American military service in the Civil War, including the bitter political struggle to give African Americans the opportunity to fight, the pervasive prejudice they faced in the military, and their extraordinary courage and achievement in many critical battles.

And Wilson gives special attention to the unique danger faced by African-American Civil War fighters: the Confederacy's “take no prisoners” policy of indiscriminately massacring surrendering African-American soldiers.

Featuring illuminating documents, stories, and personal insights, the Collector's Edition THE BLACK PHALANX is a fascinating and compelling account of a still too little known history.
