Jane Austen's Early Manuscripts in Beautiful Facsimile Editions...

A unique - and very intimate - opportunity to access the young Jane Austen at the dawning of her extraordinary literary career.

Jane Austen ranks among the English language's best loved novelists. Prior to establishing herself as a literary legend, Austen produced her first works as a teenager. These three stunning volumes -- offered here as a slipcased set -- record the stories, playlets, verses and moral fragments that give first evidence of Austen's genius just as they first appeared -- in her own hand.

The three-volume set is offered with each book bound in genuine leather and accented in 22kt gold. The page ends gleam with a shining golden finish.  Lustrous moiré fabric endsheets provide strength and elegance.  The pages are made of acid-neutral paper and are Smyth-sewn - not just glued - into the binding for long life. Jane Austen's early manuscripts in beautiful facsimile editions…

“She seems to know us better than we know ourselves,” writes the great critic Harold Bloom of Jane Austen, and as a creator of characters that readers find more real than the real people of the world, Austen stands with Shakespeare and Dickens at the pinnacle of English literature.

None of her six famous novels survives in complete manuscript form, but Austen herself collected her favorite early writings, the stories that convinced her she could be a professional author, in three hand-written volumes that still exist, the first in Oxford's Bodleian Library, and the remaining two in the British Museum.

Now, Easton Press is proud to present a set of beautiful facsimile re-creations of these literary treasures – JANE AUSTEN: In Her Own Hand, a three-volume leather-bound Collector's Edition.

Austen's personally hand-written collection of her early work.

Jane Austen's famous novels would revolutionize literature, and the brilliant, hilarious, and often outrageous stories and verses Austen collected in these notebooks reveal, as Virginia Woolf put it, a young writer “laughing, in her corner, at the world” and at conventional literature's moralistic cliches, formulaic plots, and sentimental portrayal of women.

A number of these works eventually attained a considerable fame, among them the satiric melodrama, The Beautifull Cassandra, the schoolbook parody, History of England, and Love and Freindship, [sic] a lampoon of romance novels that stars two apologetically selfish heroines.

Along with facsimiles of Austen's handwritten pages, these volumes feature transcriptions of all the stories and an introduction and notes by preeminent Jane Austen scholar, Kathryn Sutherland, who provides literary and historical context for the stories and examines how Austen put together these notebooks.

“Finely produced,” writes the Times Literary Supplement of these “handsome” facsimiles. “For anyone languishing with a broken heart there is no better tonic than the comedy -- and indeed the cathartic violence -- of Jane Austen's youthful writings.”

A unique leather-bound Jane Austen Collector's Edition set.

Easton Press has created for these facsimiles of Jane Austen's handwritten story collections a leather bound set of unmatched beauty and craftsmanship -- an Easton Press Collector's Edition, the work of American master craftsman with an uncompromising commitment to creating the-state-of-the-art in heirloom quality books.

The bindings are of beautiful and durable premium leather, hand-selected for this set, and feature traditional “hubbed” spines and 22kt gold titles and cover designs.

Only deluxe acid-neutral paper is used, and the pages are Smyth-sewn into the bindings – not glued as in ordinary books. Faux marbled end-sheets and glowing gilded page-ends add to the books' beauty and durability.

The Collector's Edition JANE AUSTEN: In Her Own Hand is a beautiful and treasured addition to any library – and a dazzling one-of-a-kind gift for any lover of literature and the incomparable Jane Austen.
