The monumental novel that swayed the heart of a nation…

"So you are the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war." – Abraham Lincoln to Harriet Beecher Stowe.

No novel ever has influenced American society as dramatically, or done so as immediately and deeply, as Harriet Beecher Stowe's 1852 Uncle Tom's Cabin; or, Life Among the Lowly.

Awakening millions to the horrors of slavery, Uncle Tom's Cabin inspired a generation to agitate – and even to fight and die – for the end of the 'peculiar institution.' And the Civil War didn't diminish the novel's popularity. Indeed, the book would eventually become the best-selling novel of the 19th century, an essential feature of American popular culture, and the model for all subsequent protest stories.

Now, Easton Press presents a stunning vintage re-creation of the lavishly illustrated 1853 'Splendid Edition” of this American classic: Harriet Beecher Stowe's UNCLE TOM'S CABIN, a leather-bound Deluxe Edition strictly limited to 1,200 hand-numbered copies.

The landmark novel that changed America.

Inspired by interviews with runaway slaves, Harriet Beecher Stowe set out to portray the evil of America's 'peculiar institution' and the legal system that enabled owners to brutalize their slaves. But she achieved much more and the novel's epic story, irresistible storytelling, and vivid now-iconic characters – Topsy, Eliza, Tom, Eva, and the cruel plantation owner, Simon Legree – seized the public's imagination in a way that no sermon or journalistic exposé could ever match.
Responding to the book's popularity, Stowe's publishers created a luxurious deluxe Christmas 'gift' edition – the “Splendid Edition” – that featured over 100 dramatic illustrations by the brilliant and versatile artist and architect, Hammett Billings. Capturing the full moral power of Stowe's story and subject, Billings hugely influential images would forever define how Americans saw slavery.

The Deluxe Edition Harriet Beecher Stowe's UNCLE TOM'S CABIN reproduces all of Hammett Billings' original illustrations and ornamental designs, as well as the handsome typography, generous layout, and other exquisite “Splendid Edition” features valued by book lovers in 1853 and fine book collectors today.
