The immortal Christmas story that became It's a Wonderful Life …

Years before the 1946 film and decades before that extraordinary collaboration between director Frank Capra and actor Jimmy Stewart was recognized as one of the greatest Hollywood movies ever, It's a Wonderful Life was The Greatest Gift -- a story that came “complete from start to finish” to author Philip Van Doren Stern in a dream.

Now Philip Van Doren Stern's The Greatest Gift is back in print in a deluxe illustrated edition that includes Marguerite Stern Robinson's extraordinary account of how her father's dream produced a story and movie that have become almost synonymous with Christmas.

Easton Press presents: THE GREATEST GIFT, an exclusive leather-bound Collector Edition.

One man's discovery of the true wonder of life.

It was the final years of the Great Depression when Philip Van Doren Stern, a noted historian and editor, conceived the story of George Pratt, a desperate man contemplating suicide on Christmas Eve who is saved when a mysterious stranger reveals how much worse the world would be if George had never lived.

But by the time Stern wrote The Greatest Gift, America was focused on World War II, and publishers showed no interest in his heartwarming fantasy. So for Christmas 1943, Stern sent out 200 copies of his story as Christmas 'cards' – one of which miraculously came to the attention of RKO Pictures and, eventually, director Frank Capra.

Released at Christmastime 1946, Capra's It’s a Wonderful Life was not an instant success. But later generations would make the film one of the most acclaimed and popular movies of all time -- and also discover Van Doren Stern's exquisite original story.

In addition to the complete original 1943 story, the Collector Edition THE GREATEST GIFT features Marguerite Stern Robinson's fascinating reminiscence and evocative wood block print illustrations by Andrew Davidson, the British artist renowned for his hand engraved covers for the Harry Potter novels.

The Greatest Gift -- in a leather-bound Collector Edition.

Easton Press has created the finest edition available of THE GREATEST GIFT – an Easton Press Collector Edition, the standard for hand-crafted leather-bound luxury bookmaking.

The binding is premium leather, selected for beauty and permanence. The spine is braced by the traditional raised “hubs” and is embossed with pure 22kt gold.

The classic Christmas parable and beautiful new artwork are preserved on specially milled archival quality and acid-neutral paper that will not yellow or fade with age.

The pages are not merely glued but Smyth-sewn into the binding. Moiré endpapers and glowing gilded page-ends add beauty and durability. No detail has been overlooked – there’s even a convenient satin-ribbon page-marker.

The work of uniquely skilled American master craftsmen, the leather-bound Collector Edition THE GREATEST GIFT will make a rousing and charming one-of-a-kind gift for any fan of the Christmas spirit or It’s a Wonderful Life.
